This spring we put out a call for help to the artists, community members, businesses and organizations of Gallup and the surrounding area to take part in the Birdhouse Project.
Each participant could use the standard birdhouse we supplied them or had the option to make or buy their own. They were asked to decorate, reinvent, repurpose, or embellish it.
This year some artists expanded on their vision to include birdhouse-themed greeting cards, a watercolor painting, quilt blocks and a scrapbook.
These will be on public display throughout Gallup, and will be auctioned off May 6th at Sammy C's Sportsbar and Restaurant at 6pm.
The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Gallup annually raises money for research, education, advocacy and cancer patient services. Relay is the major fundraising activity of the American Cancer Society. Our goal for the 2012 Gallup Relay for Life is $75,000.
The response to the project was again overwhelming, Gallup artists, craftspeople, city businesses, and others created one of a kind birdhouses. Not only is Gallup represented, but also Belen, Thoreau, Albuquerque and the Navajo Nation.
